Fuel Economy

uel economy due to low viscosity
OEMs are adapting their lubricant requirements ever more rapidly so as to be able to meet the needs of green and fuel-saving alternatives. Thanks to the introduction of the ACEA C5 standard, there will be increasing requirements for low-viscosity engine oils. A lower viscosity means less friction in the engine, and so lower energy loss. In this way, the car’s fuel is converted more efficiently into the energy needed to move the car.

Engine oil with a lower viscosity also signifies a thinner lubrication film. In the past, this effectively meant reduced protection and so more rapid wear of the engine. However, the latest generation of engines has been modified for extremely small material tolerances. The design of the lubricant must continue to be able to offer optimum protection in the more demanding conditions which arise.

Unil Lubricants is ready to move towards greener cars and has added the following FE (Fuel Efficiency) engine oils to its range:
OPALJET ENERGY FE 0W20: VW 508.00/509.00
OPALJET FEV 0W20: Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE
OPALJET FS 0W20: ILSAC GF-5
OPALJET POWERBOOST: Ford WSS-M2C948-B

Fuel economy and LSPI protection
Petrol engines with TDI technology (direct injection) offer improved fuel efficiency compared to other designs. Due to the specific design and being fitted with a turbo, a small TDI engine is able to replace a larger engine with the same power.

A troublesome side-effect of this technology is the occurrence of “Low Speed Pre-Ignition” (LSPI), in other words premature ignition of the air-fuel mixture in the engine. Various factors contribute to LSPI, namely the engine design, fuel composition and the composition of the lubricant.

That is why the latest generation of oils are thoroughly tested for LSPI protection so they can provide optimum support for the latest engine technologies..
Unil Lubricants has successfully developed two engine oils that offer optimum LSPI protection:

OPALJET LONGLIFE DEX 1.2 FE
Opaljet Millenium 3 5W30 (for PSA group)
